Billionaire philanthropist and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates recently said that the coronavirus pandemic may end in many countries by next year. He is optimistic that a coronavirus vaccine will be developed soon and the world at large will see the end of Covid-19 by 2022.
While Gates said that the economic devastation caused due to the pandemic will be hard to reverse, he said the pandemic opened up innovation pipeline on scaling up diagnostics, on new therapeutics and on vaccine research. His comments came during an interview to American magazine Wired.
Gates said the “rich world” should largely be able to end the pandemic by the end of 2021 and the rest of the world see the end of the deadly virus outbreak by the end of 2022.It is worth mentioning that the Gates Founding has been working and funding vaccine studies for the coronavirus.
Just last week, Pune-based Serum Institute of India said it will receive funding to the tune of $150 million from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the international vaccine alliance Gave to make 100 million coronavirus does for India and other emerging economy as early as 2021.
Some of the candidate vaccines that will be produced by Serum Institute of India are AstraZeneca and Novavax and both will be priced at $3 per dose. It will be made available in over 90 countries.
Gavi, which is backed by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, co-leads Covax — the initiative to guarantee fast delivery and equal access of Covid-19 vaccine across the world. The other organisations involved are the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI).
