Democrats formally made Joe Biden their presidential nominee, shortly after 10 p.m. EDT on Tuesday.
Biden received the support of enough delegates to clinch the nomination during a roll-call vote on the second night of the Democrats’ virtual national convention. The former vice president will face Republican President Trump in the November election.
Biden made an appearance from his home state of Delaware with his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, and their grandchildren after he secured the nomination. “It means the world to me and my family,” he said.
Biden was among a big poll of Democratic nominees and he was way behind the two progressive nominees Barnie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren in the early primary voting.
After winning in South Carolina and Michigan, Biden got ahead of his competitors and from there won most of the primaries leading to his nomination by the Democratic Party.
The moment marked a political high point for Biden, who had sought the presidency twice before and is now cemented as the embodiment of Democrats’ desperate desire to defeat President Donald Trump this fall.
