Washington (Kavian Press)- Geneva conference for Afghanistan ended late Tuesday, with its more than one hundred countries and organizations participants pledging over 13 billion dollars financial support to Afghan government in the next four years.
United States who was the biggest donor since the fall of the Taliban regime and has donated generously in military and civilian sectors, reduced its support significantly with only pledging six hundred million dollars with half of the amount conditioned to the prospect of the peace talks with the Taliban.
“Three hundred millions will be transferred immediately and the rest of the amount is the conditioned to the progress and prospect of peace talks with the Taliban”. US delegations stated during the conference.
While pledging their support, other countries demanded more transparency, fighting corruption seriously and protecting women rights.
European Union with pledging more than $ 1.4 billion was on top of the donors list.
During the last two donor conferences, Tokyo conference in 2012 and Brussels conference 2016 more than $30 billion was pledged for Afghanistan.
Despite, that amount in aid, Afghanistan is still among the poorest countries of the world topping in administration corruption, poverty and illegal drug production. Its capital city Kabul lacks the very basic amenities of a modern capital city lacking access to electricity, drinking water, clean air and sanitation.
