Washington (Kavian Press) – A U.S. air strike killed five Taliban fighters in central Wardak province of the Afghanistan, according to a spokesman for U.S. forces in Afghanistan
Col. Sonny Leggett, the U.S. military spokesman in Kabul, said the air strike in Wardak province was launched to provide support to the Afghan government troops and targeted Taliban fighters, killing five.
He further added that the action was in accordance with terms of the United States withdrawal agreement signed with the Taliban back in February.
“We reject the allegations of violating the agreement and of killing innocent Afghans,” Leggett said, without further details.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid meanwhile, condemned the attack and called it a violation of the Taliban-U.S. agreement.
Since the start to intra-Afghan peace talks in Qatar, Taliban has intensified their attacks against Afghan security forces and civilians. The Afghan security forces and Taliban are at war in almost every province of Afghanistan, raising concerns among international community partners and NATO allies involved in Afghanistan about the prospect of peace talks in Qatar.
Afghan government was hoping to urge the Taliban to reduce violence as the peace negotiation started, but the Taliban has so far rejected repeated calls for a ceasefire by foreign powers and the Afghan government.
