Washington (Kavian Press) – Heavy fighting between Azerbaijani and Armenian military forces over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region continued for the second day. Armenia has reported civilian and military casualties totaling around 80 people so far while Azerbaijan has not reported any casualty yet.
United Nation chief and most international community, including the United States, Russia, Iran and European powers, have been calling for an end to hostilities and the start of talks. In a statement issues by Antonio Guterres, he has called for, “he need for an immediate stop to the fighting and resumption without precondition of meaningful negotiations without delay”.
The Armenian ambassador to the UN on Monday commented on the current crisis in the Nagorno-Karabakh region and said it was “a blatant attack” by Azerbaijan against democracy and human rights.
The ongoing conflict “indiscriminately targets civilians and constitutes a flagrant violation of core human rights” said Andranik Hovhannisyan, in a Human Rights Council session.
While Turkey’s prime minister has asked the Armenian to withdraw their forces from the region, Iran, Spain and Russia have asked both sides to hold talks and commit to a ceasefire.
