Washington (Kavian Press) – Azerbaijan’s foreign ministry said on Sunday one civilian was killed and four wounded in an Armenian rocket attack. Armenia in the mean time denied it had directed fire “of any kind” towards Azerbaijan.
Azerbaijani and Armenian forces have accused each other of targeting civilians, as the week-long conflict over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh intensified.
Until now, the main fighting was between Azerbaijan and Nagorno-Karabakh, a breakaway region in Azerbaijan controlled by ethnic Armenians.
Azerbaijan’s defense ministry said in a statement posted on its website, Ganja and several other civilian areas were being attacked using rockets and shelling.
Earlier, Armenian officials said Azerbaijan’s forces had shelled Stepanakert, Nagorno-Karabakh’s main city causing civilian casualties.
“Azerbaijani forces are shelling civilian targets in Stepanakert with rockets,” Armenian defence ministry spokesman Artsrun Hovhannisyan told AFP news agency.
Azerbaijani authorities said they had taken “retaliatory measures” after rocket fire from Stepanakert.
